About Us

The global challenges posed by the ecological crisis are among the most pressing issues of our time. Sustainability initiatives aimed at adapting to this crisis and reducing its impact are essential. Beyond addressing current issues, the risks and future projections associated with the climate crisis demand active participation from all economic sectors and segments of society in efforts to adapt and mitigate its effects.

EkoFilm: Sustainable Production Platform presents a roadmap to promote environmental sustainability practices in filmmaking and enhance social awareness by supporting the industry’s potential for impact. The platform was created as part of the project titled “Connect 4 Environmental Sustainability in Film and the Media,” supported by the British Council’s Going Global Partnerships Programme and the Connect4Innovation: UK-Turkey Higher Education Institutional Partnerships Fund. Since November 2023, the project is carried out in collaboration with Cappadocia University Environmental Humanities Center, the first and only Environmental Humanities Center in Turkey, and Brunel University London, which is an educational partner of the BAFTA albert Consortium, a leading institution in film and sustainability globally. The project is supported by the YAPIMLAB education platform founded by producer Zeynep Atakan, Atlantik Film production company led by director Reha Erdem, Yuvam Dünya Association, which has been conducting various community benefit projects and social awareness studies for climate crisis awareness, and Cinema-TV Union  that focuses on improving the working conditions and establishing occupational standards.

The platform’s mission is to advance sustainable practices within the film and TV industries while raising awareness about the climate crisis. The ongoing project focuses on designing training sessions for students, educators, and professionals to promote environmental sustainability. Additionally, it seeks to develop sustainability guidelines tailored specifically to Turkey’s film industry.

The guideline for sustainable practices in film production has already been published (available here in Turkish), and a guide for sustainable content development will be released online as open access in 2025.

The carbon footprint calculator is designed to provide an overview of a production’s environmental impact. It supports the crew in implementing the recommendations from the sustainable production guide and developing a strategy to adopt sustainable practices.

Pilot training sessions are scheduled to take place during the 2024–2025 period.

The platform analyzes sustainable practices in Turkey to enhance their visibility, inspiring other productions to adopt similar initiatives.
